New Delhi: In a deviation from the various claims and protests that continue to cloud ‘Jawaharlal Nehru University’ or JNU’s name, there is some good news. In the recently declared results for the UPSC Indian Economic Services or IES examinations 2019, 18 out of 32 candidates are JNU alumni. Yashaswini Saraswat, is among the top 10 and has scored 8t rank in the examination.

Restoring the belief in the academic quality and excellence of the varsity, the topper, Yashaswini Saraswat met the Vice Chancellor, M. Jagadesh Kumar at his office yesterday. Speaking on the success of the students of JNU she said, “We are all very happy. 18 JNU students cleared the exam this year. I feel fortunate and proud to have been a part of JNU and achieved this.”

Referring to the recent events and the consequent publicity the varsity has been enjoying (the good, bad and ugly) she continued, “It hurts when something bad is said about JNU but we should take it as a challenge to show that there’s a good side to it too.”

JNU has been at the centre of a month long protest between the students and the administration over a fee hike. The protest has, over the past thirty days further escalated to increased tensions that recently culminated into an unfortunate incident of violence at the campus. Probe is still underway as the stalemate between students and administration continues.

In the wake of the recent events, JNUTA (Teacher’s Association) and students both have boycotted the classes of the winter session that resumes yesterday. Amidst the ‘bad news’ and incidents, this news further lays emphasis on the important and good the university has done and how restoring academic activities at the varsity is of utmost importance.

The Indian Economic Service is the administrative inter-ministerial and inter-departmental civil service under Group A of the Central Civil Services of the executive branch of the Government of India.
